Among 3rd gen 4Runner shoppers, one option turns an ordinary listing into a bidding war: the factory electric rear differential locker. Here's what it is, why it matters, and how to spot one.
What a locker actually does
An open differential sends power to the wheel with the least traction — lift one rear tire on a ledge and it spins uselessly while the planted tire does nothing. A locker mechanically ties both rear axles together: both wheels turn no matter what, and the truck walks over obstacles that strand open-diff vehicles. It's the single biggest traction upgrade that exists, and Toyota built it in at the factory.
Which 3rd gens have it
The e-locker was an option on certain trims and years across the 1996–2002 run — never standard, never common. The tells: a diff-lock switch on the dash and the actuator housing on the rear differential itself. Because option records are fuzzy after 25 years, always verify the hardware in person rather than trusting an ad.

- A locked rear resists turning — expect wide arcs and understeer while engaged.

No locker? You're not stuck
Open-diff 3rd gens wheel far harder than most owners ever push them, especially aired down with good tires. Momentum, line choice, and low pressure solve most of what a locker solves — and aftermarket lockers exist when trails eventually outgrow that.
