3rd Gen 4Runner Knock Sensor: The Code That Isn't What It Says

If your 3rd gen 4Runner threw a P0325 or P0330 and the internet already told you to tear the intake off, slow down. The knock sensor code is one of the most misdiagnosed problems on the 5VZ-FE — because about as often as the sensor itself dies, it's the wiring harness under the intake plenum that's actually failed. Same code, very different fix.

What the knock sensors do

The 5VZ-FE runs two knock sensors bolted into the engine valley, listening for detonation. When the computer hears pre-ignition it pulls timing to protect the engine. When a sensor or its wiring stops reporting, the ECU can't verify the engine is safe — so it sets P0325 (sensor 1) or P0330 (sensor 2), retards timing across the board, and your truck goes soft: sluggish acceleration, worse fuel economy, sometimes a slight surge. The engine isn't damaged; it's running in permanent caution mode.

Why the wiring fails

The knock sensor harness lives in the hottest place on the engine — the valley under the intake, directly on top of the block. Twenty-plus years of heat cycles make the insulation brittle, and it cracks right where the wires flex. The sensors themselves are tough; the little sub-harness connecting them often isn't. That's why replacing only the sensors sometimes brings the code straight back.

Diagnosing it without guessing

The honest answer is that a proper diagnosis means measuring resistance at the sensor circuit rather than throwing parts. But the practical reality on a 25-year-old truck is this: the intake plenum has to come off to reach either the sensors or the harness, and that's the bulk of the labor. Once you're in there, the smart move is to replace both sensors and the sub-harness together — the parts cost is small compared to doing the job twice.

What the job involves

This is a patient-afternoon job, not a hard one: upper intake plenum off, throttle cable and hoses labeled as you go, valley exposed, sensors swapped, new harness routed, everything back with fresh gaskets where needed. The single biggest tip from everyone who's done it: stuff clean rags in the open intake ports the moment the plenum lifts off. A dropped bolt in an open port turns a maintenance day into an engine-out weekend.

OEM vs cheap sensors

This is one of the places where the bargain-bin part bites back. Knock sensors are piezoelectric and calibration matters — a sensor that reports wrong is arguably worse than one that reports nothing. Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a knock sensor code?

Short distances, yes — the ECU protects the engine by retarding timing. But you're burning extra fuel and down on power the whole time, and you've lost the engine's ability to detect real detonation. Fix it sooner than later.

Why did the code come back after I replaced the sensors?

Most likely the sub-harness. The wiring under the intake fails as often as the sensors do, and if only the sensors were replaced, the brittle harness is still there. It's the classic repeat-repair on this engine.

Is P0325 vs P0330 a different fix?

Same location, same labor, same access. Whichever code you have, you're pulling the plenum — which is exactly why doing both sensors and the harness in one pass is the standard advice.

Will a knock sensor code fail emissions?

In most states with OBD plug-in testing, yes — an illuminated check engine light is an automatic fail regardless of the code behind it.
