Skid Plates for the 3rd Gen 4Runner: What to Protect First
The first time a 3rd gen slides its belly onto rock, you learn where the expensive parts live. Skid protection is cheap insurance — here's the priority order the trail actually enforces.
What's exposed under a 3rd gen
Factory "protection" is thin stamped steel over a few areas — fine for gravel spray, not for rock contact. The vulnerable hardware, front to back: the engine oil pan and front diff, the transmission, the transfer case (hangs notably low), and the fuel tank.
The protection order
- Front/engine skid: first hit on climbs and ledges; guards the oil pan that ends engines.
- Transfer case skid: the lowest drivetrain point and a frequent scraper.
- Transmission skid: often integrated with the above in full kits.
- Fuel tank skid: the trip-ender; prioritize sooner if your trails are pointy.
Steel vs. aluminum, honestly
Steel is cheaper, weldable trailside, and slides over rock with a grind — the traditional choice, at a weight cost. Aluminum saves meaningful pounds on a 183 hp truck and shrugs corrosion, at higher price and gouge-prone softness. Either beats stamped tin; weight-conscious builds lean aluminum, budget builds steel.
Fitment notes for the '96–'02
- Buy 3rd-gen-specific plates — universal panels miss mounting points and leave gaps exactly where hits land.
- Keep service access in mind: good plates include drain-plug holes so oil changes don't require removal.
- After hard hits, drop and inspect — a dented plate did its job; a cracked mount needs attention.
