Vague steering on a 3rd gen has three usual suspects, and they cost wildly different amounts: rack bushings (cheap), inner/outer tie rods (moderate), and the rack itself (the big one). Most trucks that "need a rack" actually need the first two — here's how to tell before you spend rack money.

Start with the bushings

The steering rack mounts to the crossmember through rubber bushings, and after decades they compress, crack, and let the whole rack shift under load. The symptom is distinctive: steering that feels delayed or rubbery — you turn, a beat passes, the truck responds — sometimes with a clunk over sharp bumps. Watch the rack while a helper saws the wheel with the engine running: if the rack body moves in its mounts, the bushings are done. Polyurethane replacements sharpen things noticeably and are a fraction of any other steering fix.

Then the tie rods

Jack the front, grab each wheel at 3 and 9, and rock it. Play there — with the rack body staying put — points at inner or outer tie rod ends. This is standard wear on any truck this age and doesn't indict the rack. Alignment afterward is non-negotiable.

When it really is the rack

Two honest reasons: fluid and internal wear. A rack weeping from its boots means the internal seals are passing power steering fluid — check the reservoir level over a couple weeks and look for wetness inside the accordion boots. And a rack with play at its center, after bushings and tie rods check out, is worn internally. Reman racks are the normal path; the job on a 3rd gen is very much doable in a driveway, with the fight usually being rusted hardware and the final alignment.
