TRD-Style Grille on a 3rd Gen 4Runner: The 30-Minute Facelift

By 3G 4R Offroad Co. · 2026-07-05

Every truck has one mod with an outsized visual payoff. On the 3rd gen 4Runner, it's the TRD-style grille — the single change that erases 25 years of dated chrome and gives the front end the aggressive heritage-Toyota face of the modern TRD Pro trucks. And it's genuinely a 30-minute driveway job.

Why the grille changes everything

The factory 3rd gen grille — chrome-trimmed, horizontal-slatted — is the most visually dated element on the truck. Swap it for a matte black TRD-style unit with bold TOYOTA lettering and the whole vehicle reads differently: the heritage look Toyota now charges a premium for on new trucks, on your '96–'02.

What comes in the kit

The install, honestly described

  1. Open the hood; remove the clips/screws securing the factory grille (a handful, all accessible from the top and front).
  2. Release the factory grille's retaining tabs and pull it forward and out.
  3. Seat the new grille, align the tabs, and secure with the supplied hardware.
  4. If running the LED lights: tap the wiring into the parking light circuit per the included leads — the only step that takes more than hand tools, and it's basic splicing.

Total time: 20–40 minutes with hand tools, no bumper removal, no drilling on the standard install. It's routinely the first mod owners do — and the one they say they should have done sooner.

Pairing it right

The grille sets the tone; the lighting finishes it. A blacked-out grille next to yellowed factory headlights looks half-done — pair it with black housing or LED projector headlights and the front end transformation is complete. That combination is the classic 3rd gen refresh.

Thirty minutes, hand tools, and the biggest before-and-after photo your build thread will ever get. Few mods on any truck offer that ratio.
