Sleeping in a 3rd Gen 4Runner: Dimensions and Platform Basics

By 3G 4R Offroad Co. · 2026-07-18

Before you price rooftop tents, try the accommodation you already own. With the rear seats folded, a 3rd gen 4Runner sleeps one adult comfortably and two cozily — and a simple platform makes it genuinely good.

The space, honestly measured

Seats folded, you're working with roughly 6 feet of length to the front seatbacks (more with fronts slid forward) and around 40 inches of width between the wheel wells. Taller sleepers go diagonal or slide the front seats up. The folded seats don't sit perfectly flat — which is exactly what a platform fixes.

The simple platform recipe

The community classic: a two-piece plywood deck on a short frame, sized to clear the folded seats and create a flat surface with storage underneath in totes. Keep it removable, carpet the top for comfort and rattle control, and cut it in sections so one person can load it. A weekend build with basic tools.

Why in-truck beats roof-tent for the 3rd gen

Make it livable

Window coverage (cut reflectix panels), cracked windows or the 3rd gen's party-trick power rear glass for ventilation, and a quality sleeping pad. The gear lives on the roof rack and in lockable storage so the cabin stays a bedroom.

Rack for the bulky gear, lockable side box for valuables, ladder to reach it all — the sleep-in-truck loadout.

Try five nights on a platform before buying a roof tent. Many never look back.
